1. Centre released  Rs 51,600 crore to states under MGNREGA in 2017-18 

  • The fund is released under the  the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) announcement is made by the Minister of State for Rural Development Ram Kripal Yadav, who said that the release of funds to states for the implementation of various projects. The fund is released on January 31, 2018.

2. Maharashtra Government Announce a  New Wildlife Sanctuary at Ghodazari

  • Ghodazari is in Chandrapur district of Maharashtra. The new wildlife sanctuary in the state is in the North East of Tadoba, will include 159 sq km of Brahmapuri forest. It also includes  satbahini hills, Ghodazari Lake, Muktai Waterfall.
  • The decision of setting up the Sanctuary was taken at the 13th meeting of the Maharashtra State Board for Wildlife, chaired by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis.

3. UP government  launches DASTAK campaign in association with UNICEF 

  • This is the massive door to door campaign DASTAK to eradicate deadly Acute Encephalitis Syndrome and Japanise Encephalitis disease in the state launched by the  Uttar Pradesh, State government in association with UNICEF.
  • Under this scheme  whole state machinery with the help of UNICEF will now literally go door to door in 38 JES and AE affected districts.

4. Centre Approves Project of  Rs 62 crore for cleaning Sal river

  • The project is started to revive the polluted Sal river at Navelim in Goa at an estimated cost of Rs 61.7 crore.
  • The Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) declared the the river stretch at Navelim as one of the 302 polluted river stretches across the country based on bio-chemical oxygen demand (BOD) levels in 2015.
  • Union Environment Ministry launched the project under  its National River Conservation Plan (NRCP) which covers 31 rivers (other than Ganga and its tributaries) in 14 states.

5. Atul Anand takes is appointed as the Assistant Chief of Naval Staff – FCI

  • Rear Admiral Atul Anand was commissioned in the Executive Branch of the Indian Navy in 1988. He was  the alumnus of the National Defence Academy, Khadakvasla, the Defence  Services Command and Staff College, Mirpur, Bangladesh and the National Defence College, New Delhi, and a  specialist in Navigation and Direction.
  • He also participated in the prestigious Advance Security Cooperation Course at the Asia Pacific   Centre for Security Studies, Hawaii, USA.
  • And now he has been appointed as the Assistant Chief of  Naval Staff – Foreign Cooperation and Intelligence {ACNS (FCI)} at IHQ MoD (Navy), New Delhi.


6. Syed Mahmud  Hossain appointed as  Chief  Justice of Bangladesh

  • He succeeded the  Surendra Kumar Sinha  who resigned from his post. The oath for Hossain is administered by the  President Md Abdul Hamid as the 22nd chief justice of the Supreme Court in Dhaka.

7. Sri Lanka Celebrates 70th Independence Day

  • The nation celebrated its 70th Independence Day with a  grand ceremony at the Galle Face Green in Colombo. The theme of the event is ‘One Nation’.
  • Britain’s Queen, Prince Edward attended the event  as Chief Guests in presence of President Maithripala Sirisena and Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe.

8. Dubai becomes  the world’s busiest International Airport

  • Dubai International Airport ranked as No.1 as the world’s busiest airport for ‘international travel’, after it has seen some 88.2 million passengers in 2017.
  • Dubai International Airport has maintained the title ever since, with some 90 airlines flying into skyscraper-studded Dubai. And it has surpassed London Heathrow as the world’s busiest airport for international traffic in 2014.
  • The long-haul carrier Emirates is also housed by  Dubai International Airport.
  • Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport in Georgia remains the world’s busiest airport overall.

9.   State of Emergency is declared in Maldives

  • A 15 day state of Emergency is declared in Maldives by the President Abdulla Yameen . The announcement is made by his aide Azima Shukoor announced on state television.
  • The emergency is declared due to latest crisis was triggered when the Maldivian Supreme Court ordered the release of some opposition leaders, including former president Mohammed Nasheed, after overturning their “terrorism” convictions.
  • Under this rule security forces are provided with weeping powers to  arrest and detain suspects as Yameen refuses to comply with a Supreme Court order to release political prisoners.

10. Badminton: India Open 2018 held at Siri Fort Sports Complex, New Delhi

  • Defending champion P V Sindhu was defeated by American Beiwen Zhang in women’s singles.
